Can you imagine wishing to go to a place for more than 10 years?? and for one reason or another you just can’t make it. I’ve been there, I’ve wanted to visit Machu Picchu for so many years that I’ve lost count. I was in college when my cousins and aunt visited Peru….I was jealous, happy for them and sad for me. I hoped that they appreciated the opportunity they had to see one of the wonders of the world.
I would’ve gone to Peru back in 2010, but I chose to go to Colombia because my friends were demanding that I paid them a visit in Bogotá, and so I picked Colombia over Peru…and I don’t regret it. Colombia was an unforgettable experience.Years ago, I read somewhere that the best time to go to Peru is in May, because it’s no longer raining and is right before the herds of tourists arrive. That was it for me, If I was going to go, it had to be in May. Uncountable Mays came and went and things didn’t fall through…..until now.
When you wish for something for so long, you eventually start to doubt that it will ever happen. Disheartenment came over me last year and the year before, and the year before that one…but I refused to give up hope. I bought a book about traveling to Peru as encouragement. It sat on my bookcase for three years, but it no longer looks brand new.
I finally managed to book our trip to Peru. After 80K miles and a whooping $135 for two round trip airplane tickets (yes, 135USD you read that right!) we are ready to go. Once I had booked the flight, I was shaking, my heart was pounding and my brain could not believe it!! I thought I was dreaming, that the airline was going to call me and tell me it was a mistake but they never did. For this trip more than any other I’m extremely thankful to God.
Here we are many years later….about to depart. I am ready to discover Lake Titicaca, Lima, and of course Machu Picchu. Among all the world heritage sites, Machu Picchu is considered to be the most beautiful. CNN just announced this week the list of the world’s most beloved landmarks and guess which one is #1?? Machu Picchu of course!!! As usual, I will try my best to keep you posted and capture the essence of Peru with my camera 🙂
